Sunriver is a gorgeous community nestled in the Deschutes National Forest and bordered by the majestic Deschutes River. Even though there are more trees than the eye can see, Sunriver is considered part of the high desert of Central Oregon. Sunriver sits at approximately 4,000 feet of elevation in the Cascade Mountain range in the shadow of Mt Bachelor. Surrounded by 1.6 million acres of Deschutes National Forest, Sunriver sits within just a few miles of 4 major rivers and streams, 30 lakes, and 5 snow capped mountains.

Cross Country Skiing

• With the Deschutes National Forest at your back door your options of places to ski abound. Don’t know where to start? Try the 35 miles of groomed Nordic trails on Mt. Bachelor. For more information contact the Nordic Lodge at Mt. Bachelor, or check out the winter recreation map for more ideas. 

Experience Snowshoeing

• Join a US Forest Service Naturalist on a interpretive snowshoe tour at Mt Bachelor for FREE!  Learn about winter ecology, the geology of Central Oregon, the Deschutes National Forest watershed and the plants and animals found throughout the area.

• Try marked snowshoe routes at Virginia Meissner and Swampy Lakes Sno-Parks off of Century Drive just outside of Bend. These are two main areas where snowshoers can find trails, warming huts and solace in the Deschutes National Forest.

• Take a naturalist with you on your snowshowing adventure. Wanderlust Tours brings the area alive for you with vibrant interpretation along the way and snow play for all ages. Trips are customized for all adventure desires – stroll easily on flatter areas or leap off powder-covered.  Even your teens will love it!

• Join Ranger Kipa while you explore Sunriver using your Camp Bennington Ranger Guide.  Or you can play basketball, volleyball, or other games using complimentary sporting equipment available to at the Benningon Properties office.

• The Sunriver Library has a variety of programs for all ages, which are free and open to the public. These include Family Fun Storytime held every Tuesday, a Teen Territory program, and a Digital Downloads Open Lab. The Summer Reading Program offers children, teens, and adults the opportunity to participate in numerous activities that encourage reading.

The Village at Sunriver offers miniature golf, the Alpine Express Train, bumper cars, an inflatable island, and outdoor movies all summer long.

• Your kids will love seeing all the fish at the Fall River Hatchery just South of Sunriver.

• Bring your own snowmobile? The Deschutes National Forest has over 560 miles of groomed trails for snowmobiling. Only 20 minutes from Sunriver the closest sno parks are Wanoga and Dutchman Flat.  These two parks feature some of the best snowmobiling in Central Oregon.

Sled Dog Rides!

• Dog Sledding with Oregon Trail of Dreams and Rachael Scdoris's Iditarod team!  Owned by Jerry Scodoris and his daughter Rachel, a world renowned athlete and had her first Iditarod finish in 2006.  The ride starts fast and exhilarating, with the feeling of being wild and out of control - barking, panting, snow flying everywhere! It is quite a rush! Then the ride becomes slow and inspirational, gently cresting over snowcapped hills and between snow-laden trees with majestic 10,000 ft. mountain peaks in the background.

• Billions and billions of sights to see at the Oregon Observatory at Sunriver. Feast your eyes on faraway galaxies. Witness a meteor shower. Get a glimpse of globular clusters, nebulae and deep space binary stars. Sunriver's elevation, pitch-dark surroundings, and crystal clear air make it perfect for stargazing. They have the largest collection of telescopes for public viewing in the United States.

Sunriver Revealed - Star Gaze the Sunriver Sky!  THE OREGON OBSERVATORY  began its astronomical [pun intended] growth in the 1990's culminating in its current status as the largest public viewing observatory in the country, although they do like to say ‘in the universe’.

Shred-it-up on Sleds

• The place to be for family sledding fun is Wanoga Sno-Park off Century Drive on the way to Mt. Bachelor. There’s ample parking and plenty of room to sled, toboggan or inner tube. Bring your own hot chocolate or buy it from the snack trailer in the parking lot.  Sunriver Sports in theVillage has sled rentals for $5 per day.

• Head a little farther up to Mt. Bachelor’s Snowblast tubing park and snag a day-pass for an afternoon of zooming down the mountain on innertubes.

• In Sunriver the SHARC has its own snow-tubing hill.

Mt Bachelor Shuttle

• Catch a shuttle from Sunriver up to Mt. Bachelor.  The shuttles leave from the front of the Sunriver Resort's Lodge and drop off at Mt. Bachelor's West Village.  Round trip is $20.00.  Advanced reservations are required.  For shuttle times and reservations call 541-639-3450.
